There's an 'expression' commonly used in Hollywood - and I HATE it. I first heard it when I was dating this actor in Los Angeles, and he used it to describe a pre-Oscar Helen Mirren, of all people - because he had done the whole Shakespeare actor stage thing in London with her. That he was a 48 year old male actor at the time, didn't seem to register with him.
Then - recently - I caught our beloved 50 year old D.J. using the EXACT SAME PHRASE - and I righteously went off on him about it.
The phrase? "A woman of a certain age."
I ask them - so is THAT my future? Am I DESTINED to be a 'woman of a certain age'? I'm not 37 or 42 or 53 - but I'm a woman of a 'certain age'? Is this the phrase you'll use to dismiss me, cause I'd like a bit of advance warning.
So what's the certain age? I'd love to hear it, because it sounds like a secret. I don't hear about men of a certain age. From what I can tell - according to rumour - it's usually attributed to a woman who is quite sexually attractive, but over 40. And some men find it 'icky' that women whose nipples may not point to the ceiling anymore are still sexual.
And I think that those men have some sort of bizarre 'mom' thing going on that they need to get over. Because while I understand that 19 year olds can be really cute, I look at them and think, "Honey, you have SO much to experience!".
The Lady that I called out D.J. on? Submissive Ann - a featured model in Bootlovers #56. "A woman of a certain age"!? Oh give me a break. She's a beautiful woman - in boots - who could likely teach our 20 year old models a thing or two. She doesn't pose 'coyly' like she just accidently stumbled into a pair of boots. She's not a kid.
Unlike most 20-year-olds, she OWNS her boots.
"Woman of a certain age" Oh fuck off.
